Host a Tea Party-Themed Bridal Shower

Andrea Correale, celebrity caterer and president and founder of of Elegant Affairs, gives us the inside scoop.

When planning a tea party, what’s the vibe to strive for?

"These affairs are feminine and elegant, with a fun, girly element. Picture an English tea, with beautiful teacups and scones and pastel colors. Very proper and dainty. Set the tone with your invitations: Choose a formal, feminine font on heavy paper."

What should you serve?

"The great thing is that tea foods won’t break your budget. You’ll want to feature light, delicate fare and a selection of desserts. Often, I suggest that the girls and the mother of the bride try their hands at making tea sandwiches — of course you don’t have to do that if you don’t want! Think cucumber sandwiches, for example. You take thin-sliced cucumbers (seeds removed) and arrange on pressed bread with a little butter. A favorite cost-effective idea: deviled eggs. Yes, just the way they served them at cocktail parties in the 1950s."

You can also do deviled eggs in a salad; spice them up with gorgonzola and bacon or go southwestern with diced onion or chipotle. Carry the theme through with chocolate-accented cookies shaped like tea bags for a festive finish (see recipe, below).

And the "proper" beverages to serve?

"Hot teas, of course, as well as chilled lavender or chamomile teas. A bellini cocktail made with peach nectar and prosecco (less expensive than champagne) is wonderful. I also like a traditional kir royale, made with prosecco and raspberry liqueur, topped with a fresh raspberry. Put out sugar cubes, not regular sugar, and rock candy sticks to use as stirrers."

Must tea parties be small? And what time of day is best?

"You can have groups of 50 to 100 people, or you can keep your shower very intimate. For a larger crowd, do a fabulous tea buffet on a dining room table. Use three-tier tea stands on which you can arrange your sandwiches and pastries. Traditionally, tea is served at 4 p.m., but noon or 1 p.m. is just as good."

What about décor?

"If your mom has a silver tea set, go for it! Or maybe someone has crystal goblets or a cake stand you can borrow. Use a nice linen or a lace or floral design for a tablecloth — nothing that looks contemporary. Tie each napkin with a beautiful ribbon bow. For centerpieces, fill antique-style teapots or teacups with one type of flower (a few pink or white tea roses, for example). For single use, silver-plated is an inexpensive option. Another affordable idea is to go to an event rental company for vintage-style three-tier stands and dishes (plastic or paper are fine) for an appropriately old-world effect."

What about favors?

"Small individual boxes with a variety of teas, or little potted plants in teacups, are perfect. The ladies will love them!"

Desiree Hartsock’s Bohemian-Themed Bridal Shower

By:
Stefania Sainato

This boho-chic bridal shower had a famous guest of honor, but even if you don't watch The Bachelorette, we guarantee you're going to love this summery inspiration! Desiree Hartsock celebrated her upcoming nuptials to fiancé Chris Siegfried with a pre-wedding celebration that was just as cheery as her disposition on the hit show.

The bride-to-be writes on her blog that "I can’t begin to describe how wonderful it was to have all of my closest friends in one place sharing fun stories that ranged from high school to now all while over a delicious brunch. From a flower crown making station to a ‘make your own scent’ perfume bar, my shower was one for the books and a memory that will last a lifetime."

Hartsock's good friend, Leila at Be Inspired PR, along with Jesi Haack, were the masterminds behind the day's events and oh-so-stunning décor, including bright floral arrangements and those quirky "fizz" and "yum" stations. Totally attainable, it earns our final rose vote.

Beauty-Themed Bridal Shower

The vision: to create a bridal shower with a unique, girl-powered spin — and pampering galore. The bride, Jennifer Betts Conroy, an entertainment publicist, called upon event designer Liza Naguib of DessArt Designs along with a host of beauty brands to bring her ideas into Technicolor life.

Deciding on the party location was the easy first step: With its pretty pool, gardens and a gazebo, Jen’s parents’ home in Arcadia, CA, provided the perfect setting. "I always wanted to have my bridal shower at my parents’ home, the house where I grew up. It was a dream setting for family and friends," said Jen.

Guests arrived to a full bar and lavish buffet that included sundried tomato and mushroom pasta and chicken salad with almonds, catered by Green Street Restaurant. Throughout the afternoon and into early evening, partygoers could roam the grounds and partake in mani/pedis, faux eyelash application and mini-massage stations. Talk about sweet indulgence!

Mason jars with decorative straws were displayed on a pink striped bar where guests helped themselves to mimosas, ice tea, strawberry lemonade, and flavored water. bar area

There was plenty of room for the star attraction: a dessert-slash-beauty bar. "I wanted a candy bar, but one that broke with tradition," Jen says. Think chocolate-dipped Rice Krispies treats and luscious NYX Cosmetics lip gloss, cake pops and nail polish!

The theme, "Jen's Bridal Beauty Bash" was woven throughout the decor and details, from the gift bags to the signage to the colorful fuchsia and yellow dessert takeaway boxes. There were bowls of grab-and-go beauty minis including Nivea hand cream, NYX Cosmetics lip gloss, tiny hand mirrors, sponges and emery boards.

A cheery welcome sign displayed amidst shower gifts and a quotation from Christian Dior in a lattice frame serve to set the theme in motion. Framed quotations on the subject of beauty were placed throughout, and guests were asked to spill their best-kept secrets to a happy, glamorous married life in an album set up on the gift table.

Each product was personalized with Jen’s name so guests would remember this event long after it was over. Attendees recieved hair spray, shampoo and conditioner from Joico and chose from a glass bowl brimming with NYX Cosmetics lip pencils and gloss in pink, fuchsia and rose.

Just because there’s a dessert table loaded with sugary confections doesn’t mean the event decor can’t be super sleek and sophisticated.
